Columbo's investigation began with a similar case from long long ago involving Lupin III and Edamura Makoto. It was here that he met Gadget for the first time. The current picture shows that Grucci stole the artifacts and distributed them amongst his network of spies — many of whom were formerly members of his old organization, the Gruvy Squadron — called VILE. This confused him: how could people who were so hellbent on beating someone as power-hungry as Ceil suddenly side with Grucci's power-hunger? It just didn't add up.
